ABOUT HEATHERLIE HOUSE
Unwinding in the country or wishing to find a base to explore the Borders.
Heatherlie House is a family-run country house hotel in the Scottish Borders, located in the picturesque town of Selkirk in the heart of the beautiful Scottish Borders. In the spring of 1873, a landmark agreement was inked that would lay the groundwork for one of Selkirk’s architectural marvels – Heatherlie House. At the center of this story is a contract, a Feu Contract, to be precise, which laid the groundwork for what would become an iconic Victorian mansion within the Scottish Borders.
The contract was a pact between Sir John Murray, a name synonymous with visionary zeal, and George Anderson, an individual bound by this agreement to bring to life a residence of unmatched stature. This document, recorded with precision on the 19th of April, 1873, within the General Register of Sasines for Selkirk, delineates the transfer of a significant plot—2 acres and 36.60 poles, to be exact. Yet, it was not just any transfer. It was a canvas for creation, specifying that George Anderson, and his heirs and assignees, were to construct a “good and substantial dwellinghouse” valued at no less than one thousand pounds sterling—a considerable sum at the time.
Today, Heatherlie House has been transformed into a relaxing hotel, marrying the allure of Victorian elegance with the comforts of modern hospitality. It is a haven for those drawn to the charm of a bygone era, offering a unique vantage point from which to explore the cultural and natural wonders of the Scottish Borders. With its stunning architecture, idyllic setting, and unrivaled proximity to the region’s treasures, Heatherlie House is not just a place to stay—it’s a portal to creating lasting memories in the heart of Scotland’s storied landscape.
